A rider sits a dark horse, a red canopy held overhead like a small roof against weather. Around them the crowd stands in white robes worked in vertical strokes, each face a black oval beneath a red conical hat. A black arch takes the left edge of the canvas; the ground behind is scraped back in long vertical drips that read closer to rain than to landscape.
Kalmoun paints the procession as a single body rather than a group of individuals — the canopy, the arch and the ranks of robes hold the picture in one flat, ceremonial plane. Hung opposite a window the reds carry the room; on a dark wall the whites do the work.
